The Eckleburg Project

Texas A&M's Official Literary Journal

The Eckleburg Project is the official undergraduate literary journal of Texas A&M University. We are an undergraduate organization featuring student poetry, prose, and art. Now with thirteen issues under our belt, we started with the idea that art should be free and easily accessible to the community.

Our staff is composed of undergraduate students and editors who select pieces to be published semesterly under a process of blind review. For information on how to join, go to our apply page. For information on how to submit, go to our submissions page. For general inquiries, or just to say hello, contact our organizational email at theeckleburgproject@gmail.com.

As always, we thank you for your support as we continue to foster art here at Texas A&M.

Message From the Deep by MJ Vieyra

The sky is falling,

It’s happening now on a rock beach

A thick mist has kidnapped the sun

Turquoise clouds are circling around me

My boots have sunken into the wet sand,

Freshwater and salter mix on my tongue

The temperature decreases enough for goosebumps

Yet I answered the call no one else would.

And there he rises…

The Ocean Man.

The deity that finally woke up

Living dormant under the midnight zone

A cosmic being with scales and translucent teeth

It’s maddening trying to understand his body

I clutch my scarlet flare tighter,

It illuminates his ferocious claws.

Waterfalls are pouring from his spiky gills

His head now staring down at me.

I have to tell the world about him,

Though it won’t be news to celebrate about

Only two words were required for this maxim,

“It’s over.”
